The Importance of Roof Pitch

How steep is your roof? It may seem like a simple question, but it's a key detail that's essential to know. A roof's steepness, known as its pitch, is given as a ratio that measures its height change over a 12-inch span. A typical 4/12 pitch, for instance, indicates a moderate slope that rises four inches vertically for every horizontal foot.

Moderate pitches, from around 4/12 to 7/12, typically support the widest range of roofing materials. They also make it easier for roofing professionals to work quickly and safely. Shallow pitches of 3/12 and below are also easily accessible, but limited water drainage may restrict your roofing options. Slopes of 8/12 and higher are very steep, making work more difficult and potentially increasing installation costs since it sometimes requires scaffolding to install the new roof.

Pitched Roof Types and Options

Pitched roofs come in many forms, but by far the most common type is a gable roof. This style features a central peak with two sloped sides and flat, triangle-shaped gable ends. A hip roof has no flat ends, instead featuring four sloped sides of equal length. Gambrel and mansard roofs resemble gable and hip roofs, respectively, except with the top section of each slope featuring a lower pitch.

As an Owens Corning Platinum Preferred Contractor and CertainTeed Master Shingle Applicator, Davis Roofing & Construction has premium options for every roof type. Ultra-affordable, durable, and easy to install, our asphalt shingles are available in a variety of styles for almost any roof pitch. For moderate and steep pitches, rustic wood shakes offer a stunning aesthetic, enhanced insulation, and resistance to impacts and pests. However, cedar shakes are also more costly and require more upkeep.

High-Quality Flat Roofing Systems

Despite the name, even flat roofing isn't completely flat. To prevent water from pooling, flat roofs typically have a pitch ranging from 0.25/12 to 3/12. They're most often used in commercial construction, although they can also work well for certain homes. Because they don't shed water as easily, however, choosing the right materials is essential.

Our SBS-modified bitumen roofing offers impressive results, particularly on low-slope residential roof sections. Silicone roofing is a type of “paint-on” coating used to extend the life of the roof. For commercial roofs, a thermoplastic polyolefin (TPO) membrane system can be exceedingly durable and energy-efficient. Installing it properly requires specialized skills, but it's no problem for the experienced roofing professionals at Davis Roofing & Construction. We're even certified to install Henry Coating and Mule-Hide silicone roof coating systems to extend the lifespan of your existing roof.
